BOB BALDWIN AND SENATOR COLBECK CONSULT ON MARINE PARKS

Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson has invited Senator Richard Colbeck, Federal Coalition Spokesperson for Fisheries to the electorate of Paterson to hear from residents who are concerned about the Rudd Labor Government’s proposed Commonwealth Marine Protected Areas.

Mr Baldwin and Senator Colbeck will host two forums today, in Forster and Shoal Bay, to hear directly from recreational fishers, the tourism industry, the seafood industry and other interested residents from the local community.

“I wholeheartedly support the protection of our diverse marine environment, however I am also keenly aware of the rights of the fishing and tourism communities which rely on our waters for their livelihood,” said Mr Baldwin.

“Much of the Paterson community lives, works and plays on the coast so it is vital that their views are taken directly to Canberra.

“What needs to be struck here is the right balance, and I am deeply concerned that the Rudd Labor Government simply hasn’t consulted with people enough to make that happen.

“We all saw the tragedy and disaster that occurred through Labor’s Home Insulation Program simply because Kevin Rudd and his ministers rushed the scheme without heeding advice from experts in the field.

“I will fight to stop the Marine Parks process being handled in the same reckless manner,” said Mr Baldwin.

The Forster forum will be held at Club Forster, Strand Street, Forster from 9:30 – 11am.

The Shoal Bay forum will be held at Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fish Club, 55 Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay from 7 – 8:30pm.

Attendees should RSVP to Mr Baldwin’s office on (02) 4983 1330 or via bob.baldwin.mp@aph.gov.au.
