The seat of Paterson, that was first proclaimed in 1947, is one of the most diverse electorates in the country. In its original form the seat was named in honour of Colonel William Paterson, soldier, explorer and Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales in 1809. But, with the re-creation of the seat in 1992, Paterson was appropriately named after the great balladist, Banjo Paterson, a person who regularly wrote of the spirit of a young Australia. The electorate covers an area of approximately 6,652 sw km and includes the towns of Anna Bay, Bulahdelah, Clarence Town, Dungog, Forster, Hawks Nest, Lemon Tree Passage, Medowie, Morpeth, Nelson Bay, Paterson, Raymond Terrace, Stroud, Tuncurry and parts of Nabiac, Thornton and East Maitland. The main industries of the area include timber, beef and dairy cattle, mixed farming, maize, saw milling, fishing and oyster farming, tourism and general engineering. |
