The seat of Paterson, that was first proclaimed in 1947, is one of the most diverse electorates in this country.

In its original form the seat was named in honour of Colonel William Paterson, soldier, explorer and Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales in 1809. But, with the re-creation of the seat in 1992, Paterson was appropriately named after the great balladist, Banjo Paterson, a person who regularly wrote of the spirit of a young Australia.

The electorate covers an area of approximately 9,632 sq km and includes the towns of Bulahdelah, Medowie, Dungog, Forster Tuncurry, Gloucester, Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Maitland, Morpeth, Nelson Bay, Paterson, Raymond Terrace and Stroud.

The main industries of the area include timber, beef and dairy cattle, mixed farming, maize, saw milling, fishing and oyster farming, tourism and general engineering.
