VIETNAM VETERANS’ DAY

Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson said today was an important one for every Australian, as the nation pays tribute to veterans of the Vietnam War.

“Even though I am in Canberra, my thoughts are with all those Paterson residents who served in Vietnam,” said Mr Baldwin.

“The past year has seen the loss of many ex-servicemen who now join the glorious ranks of those who have gone before them.

“May their souls rest in peace and be assured their memory will rest forever with a grateful nation,” said Mr Baldwin.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day is commemorated on 18 August each year. On that date in 1966, the Battle of Long Tan commenced in a rubber plantation in South Vietnam. It was the largest single unit battle fought in Vietnam by Australian troops, and our nation’s first major conflict in Vietnam.

Troops from the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment were ambushed by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Despite being heavily outnumbered by approximately 20 to 1 and fighting in torrential rain, Australian troops were able to hold off the enemy forces. 17 Australians were killed and 25 wounded, with one dying of wounds several days later. The Viet Cong withdrew with at least 245 dead and many more wounded.

“18 August has been set aside as a day of remembrance, not only for those brave men who fought at Long Tan, but for all those who died, were wounded or fought in the pursuit of freedom in Vietnam.

“We also remember the losses of our Allies and the family and friends of those who served.

“I would encourage everyone to pause today to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”
