TICKING TIME BOMB FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IN PATERSON
Home > Latest Media Releases > Paterson Electorate > TICKING TIME BOMB FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IN PATERSON
28 Dec 2009   Bob Baldwin
Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson has today expressed serious concern about the Rudd Labor Government’s new system of “modern awards” and what this means for local and small businesses.

“Labor’s so-called ‘modern award’ system becomes law on 1st January 2010 and many small business owners remain in the dark about what this means to them and their staff,” said Mr Baldwin.

“The most recent changes were only announced in early December, giving business owners less than a month to comply with the new laws at an extremely busy time of year.

“The changes are significant. Some awards contain increased minimum wages, higher penalty rates and higher allowances.

“Small business proprietors are busy coping with the current economic challenges and making sure their businesses remain viable and able to continue to employ, the last thing that is needed is this modern award mystery,” said Mr Baldwin.

Bob Baldwin is particularly worried about the impact of modern awards on small business owners in the horticulture, retail and community pharmacy sector.

“These sectors will be the hardest hit and I am extremely concerned they could be forced to cut jobs or reduce services for the community,” said Mr Baldwin.

“The reality is that many workers and businesses are still in the dark about these new laws and that’s why I’ve sent out hundreds of letters this month reminding business owners to prepare.

“This really is a ticking time bomb for business and I would encourage everyone to make sure they are ready for the new laws and don’t get caught out,” said Mr Baldwin.
