PARENTS URGED TO MAKE TRIP TO SCHOOL ACTIVE AND FUN
ON NATIONAL RIDE2SCHOOL DAY
Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson has encouraged local parents to make their child’s journey to school active and fun, to help combat preventable diseases such as type two diabetes and obesity.
The call coincides with national Ride2School Day which is being celebrated today.
Mr Baldwin said it was important parents reinvigorate their child’s journey to school.
“There are many different ways that children can get the recommended minimum one hour of physical activity each day,” said Mr Baldwin.
“That includes riding a bike or scooter, walking, rollerblading and skating – which can all be done on the way to and from school.
“Taking an active route to school establishes healthy habits, is fun, and can be social too,” said Mr Baldwin.
Mr Baldwin said he was concerned that Australia has seen a decline in childhood physical activity rates over recent years.
In the 1970s four in every five (80%) students walked or rode to school, but that number has now fallen to just one in five (20%), even though the majority of students live within two kilometres of the school gate.
“I would encourage parents who have the time to walk or ride to school with their child to do so,” said Mr Baldwin.
“Children who develop a healthy, active lifestyle when they are young are much more likely to maintain those habits in adulthood.
“Parents who want advice or strategies can call my office on 1300 656 840 or visit the Ride2School website at www.ride2school.com.au.
“And importantly, don’t forget to wear a helmet!”
