 FUNDING FOR COMMEMORATION

AT SOLDIERS POINT

Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson has welcomed federal funding which will help veterans reunite at Soldiers Point.

“It is a privilege to support our ex-servicemen, giving them the chance to reunite with their mates, those unique people who shared the same experience in serving our nation,” said Mr Baldwin.

The 22nd Construction Squadron RAE ex Borneo will receive $1,750 under the Saluting Their Service Commemorations grants program to hold a reunion dinner at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

The reunion will be held on 15 October 2011 to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the end of the Indonesian Confrontation.

23 Australians were killed and a further eight wounded during the Confrontation, an undeclared war fought from 1962 to 1966.

“This funding will help commemorate our nation’s brave servicemen and women, who sacrificed so much for so many,” said Mr Baldwin.

“It is imperative that these type of events are undertaken to preserve our wartime heritage.

“They also allow the community to gain a greater understanding of Australia’s involvement in wars, conflicts and peace operations,” said Mr Baldwin.

The Saluting Their Service program offers grants of up to $3000 for the restoration of memorabilia for public display; commemoration of significant military anniversaries; publishing of unit wartime histories; school initiatives and significant unit reunions.
