CORLETTE PHONE TOWER

Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson has welcomed today’s announcement that the development application for a mobile phone tower at Fame Avenue, Corlette has been withdrawn.

“I understand that Telstra has a responsibility to its customers to provide adequate mobile and wireless data coverage,” said Mr Baldwin.

“However this should not come at the expense of local residents.

“I have dealt with both Telstra and the local community throughout the course of this issue and I congratulate Telstra on its decision to look for an alternative location.

“I would also encourage strong community consultation to continue as Telstra looks for an alternative site, as the community has always been supportive of added infrastructure at a sensible location,” said Mr Baldwin.

The development application lodged with Port Stephens Council would have seen a phone tower built within 40 metres of several homes.

“I congratulate the Corlette Action Group on its hard work, representing the views of the local community,” said Mr Baldwin.

“In particular, there were concerns there was a basic conflict of interest, asPort Stephens Council was both the beneficiary and decision maker in this process, since it owned the land on which the tower was proposed.

“I am thrilled that Telstra has listened to the local community it serves.”
