BALDWIN CALLS FOR PROPER CONSULTATION
ON MOBILE PHONE TOWER
Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson said local residents were furious regarding the lack of consultation over plans to build a new mobile phone tower in Corlette.
“I support moves to boost mobile phone coverage in Port Stephens, however proper consultation must occur with the community when it involves the installation of a new tower,” said Mr Baldwin.
Telstra has moves underway to build a new mobile phone tower on Port Stephens Council reserve land near Fame Avenue.
Mr Baldwin says Telstra sent a letter to residents asking them to comment on the development application in October 2010. However, it appears the letter was only received by residents on the southern side of the reserve.
Port Stephens Council sent its own letter inviting submissions in late December.
“The letter from Port Stephens Council was the first many residents had heard of the proposal,” said Mr Baldwin.
“To make matters worse, the letter arrived during the holiday period when many people were away and gave them just two weeks to comment.
“I immediately contacted the Mayor and Deputy Mayor when I was made aware of this issue and the submission period was extended by one week, however that still was not enough time for many locals to comment.”
Mr Baldwin called on those involved to now increase community consultation.
“I have always found Telstra to be pro-active in dealing with the issues I have raised on behalf of constituents and I am hopeful of a positive outcome,” said Mr Baldwin.
“That said, what I would like to see is Telstra working together with Council and the community to find a location for the mobile phone tower which best serves our area and its people.”
