29 Jan 2010   Bob Baldwin

Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson has today travelled to Dungog to celebrate and congratulate Lara Aged Care facility on 20 wonderful years caring for the frail aged.

Lara Aged Care was opened in January 1990 after 12 years of dedicated fundraising, planning and work by members of the local community. This time was not without great obstacles including flooding and construction difficulties due to hard granite rock – hence the name “Lara” which is an Aboriginal term for “home built on rock.”

“I am honoured to be able to help mark this special day which recognises the work of past and present staff, as well as all those in the community who helped make this facility a reality,” said Mr Baldwin.

As part of today’s celebrations, Lara Aged Care will also be naming the extensions to its activity room. Residents have chosen the name Silky Oak Hall. These extensions were made possible through the generosity of the late Robert McKinnon whose entire estate was bequeathed to Dungog and District Retirement Living Ltd.

The former Coalition Government also made a significant contribution.

“In 2004 the Coalition provided a $220,000 grant which enabled Lara Aged Care to expand by 10 beds and I have been pleased to watch it go from strength to strength,” said Mr Baldwin.

“This is a wonderful facility right next door to the hospital with beautiful views of the countryside.

“Lara Aged Care provides not only valuable services for our elderly community, but also employment for more than 70 staff.

“In light of our ageing population I have no doubt the centre will only grow further into the future and together with residents and staff, I forward to the next 20 years,” said Mr Baldwin.
